Warp & Weft

Denim’s classic look comes from its twill structure: indigo-dyed warp yarns running lengthwise and undyed white weft yarns running crosswise, with the warp dominating the face and the white showing on the back and at the fades. Because indigo dyes only the outside of the warp yarns (ring dyeing), abrasion reveals the white core — which is why denim fades where it flexes. Understanding warp and weft explains fades, why the inside of jeans is pale, and why some denim fades high-contrast and some muted. It is the vocabulary that makes the rest of denim specs legible.
