Sanforized vs Unsanforized (Shrink-to-Fit)
Sanforization is a controlled pre-shrinking process, so sanforized denim barely changes size after washing — you buy your measured size. Unsanforized ("shrink-to-fit" or "loomstate") denim will shrink noticeably on first wash, so you size up and shrink it to fit, which is a genuine skill and gamble. Most denim today is sanforized for predictability; unsanforized is a purist niche. The practical point is sizing: confusing the two is the classic way to end up with jeans two sizes wrong. A spec that states sanforized-or-not is telling you exactly how to size the order.
