Ply (Knitwear)

Ply counts the individual strands twisted together to make the knitting yarn: 2-ply means two strands, and so on. Ply is often confused with warmth, but it more directly affects yarn strength, evenness, and the fabric’s heft at a given gauge — a 2-ply fine-gauge knit is typically more durable and less prone to snagging than a single-ply one. Warmth depends more on fiber, gauge, and total weight. On a spec sheet, ply is a modest durability signal; combined with gauge and fiber it helps you picture the actual density of the sweater before it arrives.
