Are expensive basics ever worth it?

Sometimes — the test is cost per wear, not the sticker. A pricier staple earns its cost when it lasts proportionally longer or gets worn far more often: welted boots you resole for a decade, a heavyweight tee that survives years of rotation, a solid-leather belt worn daily. It is not worth it when the premium buys branding, a marginal fabric upgrade, or a piece you will rarely wear. The honest limit is that longevity is an estimate from published durability data and broad consensus, not a promise. Run the math on the specific piece; expensive is only cheap if it actually lasts.
