Thursday Captain vs President: which boot should you buy?

Buy the Captain if you want a cap toe, the widest choice of leathers and widths, and speed hooks on every colorway; buy the President if you prefer a plain toe that reads more traditional and makes a small foot look longer. Below the toe they are the same boot: Goodyear welt, Tier 1 USA leather, glove-leather lining, cork-bed midsole and a studded rubber outsole, at $199 each per Stridewise (checked October 2026). The toe shape and the options menu decide it, not the quality.

This comparison is built from Thursday Boot Company's product pages and FAQ and from Stridewise's published reviews and comparison, rather than first-hand use. Thursday's pages do not print a price in their visible text, so the $199 figure is Stridewise's; confirm it on the product page before you order.

What the two boots share

Thursday describes the Captain as "a comfortable, durable, and versatile cap toe boot handcrafted with the highest quality Tier 1 USA leather and featuring Goodyear welt construction", and the President pages list the same build underneath a plain toe. On both, the maker says Goodyear welt construction makes the boots water resistant and completely resoleable, the interior is a full glove-leather lining, the midsole is a cork bed that forms to your feet over time, and the outsole is a studded rubber unit for extra grip on all surfaces. Thursday's comfort note applies to both as well: depending on the style, the brand uses glove leather lining, cork-bed midsoles, EVA foam comfort strips for shock absorption and anti-fatigue steel shanks for arch support.

Where they are made is identical too. Thursday's FAQ says it manufactures in León (Mexico), Porto (Portugal), Alicante (Spain) and Arkansas (USA), and names its two largest leather partners as the gold-certified Le Farc tannery in Mexico and the Horween tannery in Chicago. Stridewise's Captain review adds that most of the uppers come from the Lefarc tannery in León, which also supplies brands such as Timberland and Huckberry.

Price is where the shared platform pays off. Stridewise's President review puts it plainly: a leather boot with Goodyear welt construction would usually set you back at least $300, but Thursday sells them for $199. The same reviewer's Captain write-up notes that almost every other Goodyear welted boot on the market is over $300. Our Thursday vs Red Wing comparison covers what the extra money buys at the higher tier; this page is about the choice inside Thursday's own range.

The toe cap is the only visual difference

Stridewise's comparison opens by saying the two seem like the same boot, with only a toecap to differentiate them, then corrects itself: the Captain's cap is two pieces of leather stitched together rather than one layer on top of the other. That matters for how the boot ages. A stitched seam across the vamp breaks up creasing and gives the eye a line to follow; a plain toe shows every flex crease and relies on the leather's finish to look good. Thursday's own line for the President frames it as the all-rounder: whether at work, on a date, or in stormy weather, step forward in confidence in the President boot.

The cap also changes proportion. Stridewise notes that toe caps can sometimes make small feet look smaller, so if that is a concern, the plain-toe President is the safer choice. With a larger foot the effect reverses: the cap shortens the visual run of leather, which is why the Captain is often the pick for sizes at the top of the range.

Speed hooks depend on the leather, not just the model

Thursday's product pages do not list lacing hardware, so this point rests on Stridewise. Its comparison states that all the Captains have speed hooks while only some of the Presidents do, and its President review explains the logic: the Classic leathers skip the hooks for a cleaner, dressier look, while the Rugged & Resilient leathers include them because hooks make a boot faster to lace but dress it down. Thursday's spec lists confirm the lace split at least: Classic colorways list premium flat waxed cotton laces for a clean and sophisticated look, while Rugged & Resilient colorways list Kevlar blend laces that add a durable finish and lend a rugged look. If quick lacing is a priority, buy a Captain or a Rugged & Resilient President, and check the photos of the exact colorway, because configurations change.

Leather lines: Classic, Rugged & Resilient, suede

Both boots are sold in Thursday's two main leather families. Stridewise's Captain review sums them up as Rugged and Resilient for harder wear and Classic for more versatility. Thursday describes the Rugged & Resilient upper as matte leather sourced exclusively from Tier 1 USA cattle hides, custom created to look great with years of hard wear and minimal care; Stridewise adds that these options are oil-tanned for extra durability. Classic leathers are the smoother, dressier finishes that Thursday says only get better with age.

The Captain's menu is longer. Stridewise notes it is the more popular boot and therefore comes in more leathers and more experimental offerings, while the two models overlap mainly on the brown Thursday Chrome and the natural Horween Chromexcel. Suede exists on both: Thursday sells a traditional snuff suede and a WeatherSafe suede that Stridewise describes as so full of hydrophobic oils that water bounces off it. For a primer on what these finishes mean, see our leather grades explainer.

Widths and sizing are shared, but the Captain offers more Wide colorways

Thursday's FAQ says its Standard width most closely conforms to a traditional D width, which fits about 80% of the United States population, and that select models come in a Wide option for EE or EEE feet. Stridewise counted more Captain colorways in Wide than President colorways, which is a practical reason to lean Captain if you need the room. Sizing guidance is identical: order half a size smaller than your sneaker size, or the same size you wear in other leather boots and dress shoes. Thursday also warns that durable leathers can occasionally take more than a few wears to break in, which applies to the Rugged & Resilient line on either boot.

For scale, Stridewise's Captain review measures the boot at 5.5 inches tall plus 1.25 inches of heel; the President shares the pattern below the ankle, so expect the same stance.

Soles: the StormKing gap has closed

Stridewise's comparison, written when the StormKing lug sole was Captain-only, says the author expected Thursday to offer the same soles on both boots in time. That has happened: Thursday's store now lists a Men's President StormKing Lace-Up Boot in Black Matte, described as a President that also features the proprietary StormKing rubber lug outsole for added traction and durability, alongside the StormKing Captain. The standard sole on both remains the studded rubber outsole. If you want the lug sole, both models now qualify.

Which boot for which wardrobe

  • Office and smart-casual: the President in a Classic leather is the quieter boot: plain toe, waxed cotton laces, no hooks. A Captain in Classic brown or black is the alternative if you want one detail of visual interest.
  • Wet commutes and hard wear: either boot in a Rugged & Resilient leather, with the StormKing sole if traction matters. Thursday's FAQ says its boots are water resistant and will keep your feet dry on typical rainy days, but it does not recommend standing around in puddles.
  • Smaller feet: the President, for the proportion reason above.
  • Wide feet: the Captain, because more of its colorways come in Wide.
  • Maximum choice: the Captain, which carries the longer leather list and the experimental colours.
  • Work-site use: neither. Stridewise's President review notes there are no ASTM ratings, so these are not safety boots.

Cost per wear and the resole math

Because both boots are Goodyear welted, the longevity case is the same. Thursday says the welt makes them completely resoleable, and its FAQ points to repair partners for a full resole. The question is whether you will wear one pair often enough to justify recrafting it; our boot care and resole math walks through when a resole beats a replacement, and the buy-once vs replace piece runs the numbers at this price tier. For the broader field at this budget, our ranking of welted boots at this price sets the Captain against its rivals, and our Captain review grades the construction line by line.

Buying notes

Thursday ships free within the contiguous United States and offers free returns and exchanges for items valued at $80 or more, which covers either boot. Stridewise lists both at $199 (checked October 2026); Thursday's pages render the price outside the readable text, so treat that figure as a reference and confirm it live. Article FAQ

Do the Captain and President fit the same?

Yes. Thursday applies one sizing rule to both: order half a size smaller than you wear in sneakers, or your usual size in leather boots and dress shoes. The last and the Standard width are shared, so a size that works in one works in the other. Only the Wide option differs, because fewer President colorways are offered in it.

Does the President have speed hooks?

Some colorways do and some do not. Stridewise reports that Rugged & Resilient Presidents come with speed hooks while the Classic leathers generally use eyelets only, matching the lace split Thursday lists on its pages. Every Captain has hooks. Check the product photos of the exact colorway before ordering.

Which is better in the rain?

Neither has an edge: both use the same Goodyear welt that Thursday says makes the boot water resistant, and both are available in Rugged & Resilient leather, which the maker describes as built for years of hard wear and minimal care. For the grippiest footing, choose the StormKing lug sole, which is now listed on both models.

Is the President a work boot?

Not in the safety sense. Stridewise's review notes the President carries no ASTM ratings and has no steel toe or electrical hazard protection; the reviewer calls it a hybrid that is neither a bulky work boot nor a dainty dress boot. Thursday's own copy pitches it for work, dates and stormy weather in the everyday sense.

Where are Thursday boots made?

Thursday's FAQ lists its manufacturing in León (Mexico), Porto (Portugal), Alicante (Spain) and Arkansas (USA), with leather from the Le Farc tannery in Mexico and Horween in Chicago among others. Stridewise notes most uppers come from Lefarc in León.
